With the resources for sexual health on the internet being numerous, its hard to know where to go. Well now HIM has a one-stop shop for gay men’s sexual health information. The site bundles a host of HIV and STI testing resources together; those who visit www.checkhimout.ca/testing are invited to learn their own “number” – that is, how many times per year they should be testing for HIV, based on their level of risk.

The site includes a number of technological firsts: visitors can sign up for free automatic SMS and/or e-mail testing reminders, use a personal risk assessment tool, notify partners of potential STIs via SMS and/or customizable e-card, and even search a database of every STI and HIV testing clinic in the province, (including by user-submitted reviews and ranking based on gay men’s service experiences).

“Gay men in Vancouver already test for HIV at an impressive rate,” said Jody Jollimore, Senior Program Manager for Health Initiative for Men. “86% of gay and bisexual men surveyed in Vancouver have been tested for HIV already. With this website, HIM has created a resource for gay men to make HIV testing a regular part of their health routine by knowing how often to test, how to locate a clinic near them, and even how tell their partners of any STIs.”

(English) The Sex You Want, created by the AIDS Committee of Toronto in partnership with the Gay Men’s Sexual Health Alliance and in consultation with an Advisory Committee of Educators from across Ontario.

The Sex You Want

When it comes to safer sex, gay and bi guys know our stuff. After all, our community invented safer sex, and studies show that we practise it the most.

That’s why this website isn’t telling you what you already know. We want to go beyond the basics and tackle more advanced questions gay and bi guys have about sex, pleasure and risks. Condoms are still the best protection we have. We talk about condoms, and also how to reduce your risk in other ways.

Isn’t it safer on top?

Can I fuck without a condom if my HIV viral load is undetectable? Are there drugs to prevent HIV?

Is it dangerous to party and play?

Who actually uses a condom when they’re in a relationship?

You might be surprised at the answers. We just give you the facts and let you make your own decisions. We all accept different levels of risk every day, and that’s okay. What matters is that we have enough information to be comfortable with the risks we take. All of the prevention strategies in this resource contain elements of sexual health risk.

We put this information together because we care about our community – our right to health and our right to have a good time. We care about you. We don’t think you should have to choose between pleasure and health. In fact, we think you can’t have one without the other.

(English) Coalition of Public Health and Legal Experts Urges Rational Response to Prosecution of People Living with HIV

Coalition of Public Health and Legal Experts Urges Rational Response to Prosecution of People Living with HIV

(New York, April 27, 2011) – The Positive Justice Project, a coalition of legal and public health experts that represent people living with HIV, is speaking out against sensationalist media coverage of criminal charges that have been brought against an HIV-positive AfricanAmerican man in Buffalo.

Darryl Fortner, 20, who has no prior criminal record, has been charged with reckless endangerment for allegedly failing to disclose his HIV status to his sexual partners.

The Positive Justice Project urges journalists to consider the following in their coverage.

A wide range of health and human rights organizations, including the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, have condemned the criminal prosecution of people living with HIV for not disclosing their status. While these prosecutions often seem to protect the public health, they actually undermine public health initiatives by discouraging testing and fueling stigma. They also put HIV-positive people at high risk of unjust prosecution. President Obama’s own National HIV/AIDS Strategy, released in 2010, questions the efficacy of such laws and calls for a comprehensive review of them.

“Rushing to judgment and demonizing a young black man on the basis of his HIV status has a horrible impact not only on people who already are diagnosed with HIV, but on all of those in my community who are afraid to get tested,” said Kali Lindsay, a public policy expert at Harlem United and a person living with HIV. “No one is going to get tested for HIV if they think that knowing their status will land them in jail.”

Fortner’s arrest is one in a long line of cases across the country where HIV-positive persons, often African American, are facing criminal charges and disproportionately long sentences for otherwise-legal behavior on the basis of their HIV status. Intent to transmit or intent to expose others to HIV is rarely–if ever–a consideration in these cases, which typically turn into a credibility battle in which the person who has first discovered he or she is HIV positive is assumed to be dishonest.

“The over-reaction to this type of situation has no support in public health principles,” said Terrence Moore, Associate Director of Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities at the National Association of State and Territorial AIDS Directors.

On Wednesday, April 20, Fortner was charged with one count of reckless endangerment for allegedly not disclosing his HIV status prior to engaging in sexual conduct.

Journalists should keep in mind that to be charged under reckless endangerment in New York, one must have presented a “grave risk of death” to another person. HIV is no longer considered a death sentence, but rather a chronic disease.

“These laws and prosecutions continue to occur because people incorrectly believe that HIV is quickly and invariably fatal and as such should be treated differently than other sexually transmitted infections,” said Vanessa Johnson, Deputy Executive Director of the National Association of People with AIDS. “That’s just not the case. And until legislators, law enforcement officials, and prosecutors understand HIV in the 21st-century, these miscarriages of justice will continue to happen all over the country.”

****

The Positive Justice Project is the first coordinated national effort in the United States to address HIV criminalization, and the first multi-organizational and cross-disciplinary effort to do so. HIV criminalization has often resulted in gross human rights violations, including harsh sentencing for behaviors that pose little or no risk of HIV transmission.

Thu, 03/17/2011 – 8:00am

Do you believe that we need new tools in our HIV prevention toolbox? At the HIV Prevention Justice Alliance, we support broad and strategic research to explore new methods and interventions for HIV prevention.

Like many of you, we were intrigued by the results of the iPrex trial of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) that came out late last year. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) should review those results and determine if PrEP is safe and effective enough to be approved for widespread use.

Unfortunately, a key HIV health care provider is asking the FDA to deny this choice to gay men and transgender people across the United States. Sign this letter as individuals and/or organizations to support immediate FDA review of PrEP.

The iPrEx trial showed that daily use of the treatment pill TDF/FTC (brand name Truvada) as part of a comprehensive prevention package reduced the risk of HIV infection by 44 percent across the whole group of gay men, other men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women who have sex with men (TSM) who volunteered in the study. Half of that group received Truvada and half did not in order to compare whether its use made a difference.

44% may not seem like a home run, but it can have a powerful impact for the people who need it. It’s well within the accepted range for many widely used prevention interventions and medical treatments – and could be the first step towards a true advance in HIV prevention. And it’s much better than 0% protection for folks who are unable to use condoms, for whatever reason.
