I Love You Phillip Morris is the unbelievable but true story of con artist Steven Russell (a wild and crazy Jim Carrey) and the object of his affection Phillip Morris (a sweetly naïve Ewan McGregor). The two men meet and fall in love in prison and Russell embarks on increasingly outrageous cons to support the man he loves. The film works best as a comic vehicle for Carrey, but McGregor’s utterly endearing performance provides its heart.

Good Swan/Bad Swan

Black Swan is the psycho-sexual lesbian ballet thriller that your friends and the critics have been raving about. Kidman’s best in years

Rabbit Hole directed by John Cameron Mitchell (of Hedwig and the Angry Inch fame) is based on David Lindsay-Abaire’s Pulitzer Prize winning play. Nicole Kidman gives her best performance in years as a mother coping with the death of her four-year old son and Aaron Eckhart is wonderful as her husband. Despite its potentially depressing subject, the film is warm, compassionate, and beautifully human.

Welcome to the ’60s

A Single Man is last year’s adaptation of Christopher Isherwood’s novel starring Colin Firth as a middle-aged gay man in the 1960s dealing with the death of his young partner (Matthew Goode). Directed by fashion designer Tom Ford, the film stresses cologne ad imagery over emotional resonance, but Firth’s performance is well worth watching.
